Buying a second hand DJI drone in India: what to check.

By the NVX engineering team, New Delhi

A used DJI drone can save a lot of money, but drones hide damage well: a hard crash can leave a gimbal, motor or battery weak without any visible mark. Run these checks with the seller before you pay. If anything looks wrong, have the drone checked in a workshop first.

Paperwork and ownership

Do these first: if they fail, nothing else matters.

Original invoice

Ask for the original GST invoice. The serial number on it should match the drone and the box.

Serial numbers

Check the serial on the drone body, the battery and the controller, and in the DJI Fly app.

How it entered India

India has prohibited importing complete foreign-made drones since February 2022, with narrow exceptions. A drone with no clear purchase record can be hard to register.

UIN transfer

If the drone is above 250 g it should already have a UIN on Digital Sky. Ask the seller to transfer it to you.

Account binding

If the app asks, the seller must unbind the drone from their DJI account so you can activate it.

Hardware checks

Do these with the drone powered on and connected to the app.

Battery health

Check each battery's cycle count and health in the app, and look for swelling. Batteries are expensive to replace.

Gimbal and camera

Power on and watch the gimbal start-up; tilt and pan it in the app. Shaking, a tilted horizon or a gimbal error is a warning sign.

Motors and arms

Spin each motor by hand: it should turn smoothly without grinding. Look for cracks around the arm hinges.

Sensors and calibration

Look for compass, IMU or vision sensor warnings in the app.

Hover test

Fly a short, low hover in an open green-zone area. The drone should hold position without drifting.

Flight records

The app keeps flight records. A short history is fine; ask about any record that ends suddenly.

Controller and cables

Check the sticks, buttons, charging port and that the controller pairs.

Fair price for a used DJI drone

Compare the asking price with the new price of the same model and combo; our DJI drone price guide lists what sellers in India are asking for new units. Price drops quickly for older models, for drones with worn batteries and for drones without an invoice. Count how many batteries and accessories come with it.

Get it checked at NVX before you pay

If you are buying in Delhi NCR, bring the drone to NVX Drone Store in Connaught Place with the seller. As an independent DJI repair workshop we can diagnose it on the bench and tell you what, if anything, needs repair, with a quote before any work.

FAQ

Second Hand DJI Drone: common questions

Is it safe to buy a second hand DJI drone?

It can be, if the seller has the original invoice, the serials match, the batteries are healthy and the drone passes a hover test. Without an invoice or with a hidden crash, it is a risk.

What should I check before buying a used DJI drone?

Invoice and serial numbers, UIN transfer if above 250 g, account unbinding, battery cycle count and swelling, gimbal and motors, sensor warnings, flight records and a short hover test.

Can a used drone's UIN be transferred?

Yes. A drone that has a UIN on Digital Sky can be transferred to the new owner through the platform.

Which used DJI drones are popular in India?

Older Mini models (Mini 2, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro), the Air 2S and the first Avata are common on the used market because new prices for the latest models are high.

Does NVX sell second hand drones?

Ask us on WhatsApp. We can also check a drone you plan to buy, as an independent repair workshop.

How much does it cost to repair a crashed DJI drone?

It depends on what broke; gimbal and camera damage costs most. Our DJI repair cost guide explains what decides the price.
