How to register a drone in India and get a UIN.

By the NVX engineering team, New Delhi · 22 October 2026 · 6 min read

In India, most drones must be registered on the government's Digital Sky platform and carry a Unique Identification Number (UIN) before they fly. Here is who needs it, how the process works and the mistakes to avoid. Rules change, so always confirm the latest requirements on digitalsky.dgca.gov.in.

Which drones need registration?

Registration depends on the drone's weight category under the Drone Rules, 2021.

Nano (up to 250 g)

Generally exempt from registration for recreational flying. Check the current rules before commercial use.

Micro (250 g to 2 kg)

Registration and a UIN are required.

Small (2 kg to 25 kg)

Registration and a UIN are required, and commercial operation needs a certified remote pilot.

Medium and large

Registration plus stricter operational and certification requirements.

How to register, step by step

The process is online on the Digital Sky platform.

1. Create a Digital Sky account

Sign up as an individual or organisation with your identity details.

2. Add the drone

Enter the manufacturer, model and serial number. Type-certified models make this simpler.

3. Pay the fee

Pay the prescribed registration fee online.

4. Get your UIN

Once approved, the UIN is issued. Mark it on the drone as required.

5. Keep records

Keep the registration details handy and update them if you sell, transfer or deregister the drone.

Common mistakes

Problems we see when customers bring drones to our workshop.

Flying before registration

A drone that needs a UIN should not fly until it has one.

Wrong weight category

Weigh the drone with battery and accessories; add-ons can push a 249 g drone over 250 g.

Forgetting the airspace map

Registration does not mean you can fly anywhere. Check the zone map first.

Not transferring on resale

Update the record when you sell or buy a used drone.
