How to fly a drone: a beginner's guide.

By the NVX engineering team, New Delhi · 22 October 2026 · 7 min read

Most drones we repair were crashed in their first few flights. The good news: almost every beginner crash is avoidable. Follow this step-by-step guide for your first flights, written by the NVX team that builds, flies and repairs drones in New Delhi.

Before your first flight

Ten minutes of preparation saves most crashes.

Read the rules

Check registration needs and the airspace zone for your location.

Charge everything

Drone batteries, controller and phone. Never start a flight on a half battery.

Update firmware

Update at home, not in the field.

Pick an open space

A large, empty field away from trees, wires, people and buildings.

Calibrate if asked

Calibrate the compass or IMU only when the app asks, and away from metal and cars.

The controls (Mode 2)

Most drones in India use Mode 2.

Left stick up and down

Throttle: climb and descend.

Left stick left and right

Yaw: turn the nose left or right.

Right stick up and down

Pitch: fly forward and backward.

Right stick left and right

Roll: slide left or right.

Your first flight, step by step

Go slowly; smooth beats fast.

1. Wait for GPS lock

If your drone has GPS, wait for enough satellites and a home point before take-off.

2. Take off to eye level

Hover at 2-3 metres and let go of the sticks. Watch how the drone holds position.

3. Practise one axis at a time

Small forward, backward and sideways moves, returning to the hover each time.

4. Keep the nose pointing away

Controls feel reversed when the drone faces you. Turn it only once you are comfortable.

5. Land early

Land with at least 25-30% battery left. Descend slowly over a clear spot.

Beginner mistakes we see in the workshop

Flying in wind, taking off from grass or sand, flying behind trees and losing signal, ignoring low-battery warnings, and flying in sport mode too early. If a crash happens, remove the battery, do not power it on again if it is wet or damaged, and get it checked.

FAQ

How to Fly a Drone: common questions

Is it hard to fly a drone?

Modern GPS drones are easy to hover. Smooth, confident flying takes a few hours of practice in an open space.

What is the best way to learn to fly a drone?

Start in a large open field, practise hovering and one-axis moves, and consider a simulator or a beginner session with a trainer.

How high should a beginner fly a drone?

Stay low, at 2-10 metres, until you are comfortable, and never above the legal limit for your zone.

What should I do if my drone crashes?

Remove the battery, do not fly again until it is checked, and look for broken propellers, arms or gimbal damage. NVX repairs crashed drones in New Delhi.

Does NVX offer drone training?

Yes. NVX offers on-site demos and training for schools, institutions and teams in Delhi NCR.
