How to choose the best drone for beginners in India.

By the NVX engineering team, New Delhi · 22 October 2026 · 6 min read

The best beginner drone is not the most expensive one. It is the drone that suits how you want to fly, is legal to fly where you live, and can be repaired locally when something breaks. Use this checklist before you buy.

A small drone suitable for beginners

First decide what you want to do

Different goals need different drones.

Photos and travel videos

A camera drone with GPS, a gimbal and return-to-home.

Thrills and freestyle

An FPV drone, ideally after practice on a simulator and a tiny whoop.

Learning and STEM

A small, inexpensive training drone that can take crashes.

Events and gifts

Something special and safe indoors, such as Titli, a bionic butterfly drone.

Work

Mapping, inspection or agriculture need an enterprise drone and a certified pilot.

The beginner's checklist

Tick these before you pay.

Weight category

A drone up to 250 g has the lightest rules for recreational flying in India.

GPS and return-to-home

Makes hovering and recovery far easier for beginners.

Real flight time

Ignore the box number; real flight time is usually lower. Plan on spare batteries.

Spares and repair

Can you buy propellers, arms and batteries in India, and who will repair it?

Legal to import and sell

Foreign-built drone imports are restricted since 2022; buy from a seller who can show the documents.

Budget honestly

Add up the drone, two or three spare batteries, a charging hub, propellers, a case and possible repairs. A cheaper drone with good local support often costs less over a year than a premium drone that has to be sent abroad for every fix.

FAQ

Best Beginner Drone India: common questions

Which drone is best for a beginner in India?

A light GPS camera drone (up to 250 g) is the easiest start for photos. For FPV, start with a simulator and a tiny whoop. Choose a model with spares and repair available in India.

Do I need a licence for a beginner drone?

No remote pilot certificate is needed for nano drones, or for micro drones flown non-commercially, under the Drone Rules, 2021. Registration rules depend on weight.

How much should I spend on my first drone?

Spend on what you will actually use, and keep money aside for spare batteries and repairs. Avoid very cheap toys if you want photos or stable flight.

Is an FPV drone good for beginners?

FPV is harder to learn. Practise on a simulator first, then fly a small, durable FPV drone.

Where can I get my drone repaired in Delhi?

NVX repairs DJI, FPV and other drones at its Connaught Place workshop and accepts couriered drones from across India.
