Drone basics

How does a drone work? Parts and flight, explained simply.

By the NVX engineering team, New Delhi · 22 October 2026 · 6 min read

A drone looks simple: a frame, some propellers and a camera. Inside, a small computer makes hundreds of corrections every second to keep it steady. Understanding the parts helps you fly better, buy smarter and know what is wrong when something fails.

The main parts

What each one does.

Frame

Holds everything together; carbon fibre or plastic.

Propellers and brushless motors

Brushless motors spin the propellers to create lift. Pairs spin in opposite directions to cancel twisting.

ESCs

Electronic speed controllers adjust each motor's speed on command.

Flight controller

The brain: reads sensors and controls the motors many times per second.

IMU and compass

Sense tilt, rotation and heading so the drone knows its attitude.

GPS and vision sensors

Hold position, return home and avoid obstacles.

Battery

Usually lithium polymer or lithium-ion; the main limit on flight time.

Radio, camera and gimbal

Link to the controller, capture video and keep the camera steady.

How a drone moves

Everything comes from changing motor speeds.

Up and down

All motors speed up or slow down together.

Forward, back, sideways

The motors on one side spin faster, tilting the drone so it moves.

Turning

Speeding up the clockwise or anticlockwise pair rotates the drone.

Why this helps when something goes wrong

A twitching gimbal points to the gimbal motor or cable, drifting in a hover to the vision sensors or IMU, and a drone that flips on take-off to a motor or propeller fault. Knowing the parts helps you describe the fault, and helps a technician fix it faster.

FAQ

How Does a Drone Work: common questions

How does a drone fly?

Propellers driven by brushless motors create lift; the flight controller changes each motor's speed to climb, tilt, move and turn.

What is the brain of a drone?

The flight controller, which reads sensors such as the IMU, compass and GPS and controls the motors.

What is an IMU in a drone?

An inertial measurement unit that senses acceleration and rotation so the drone knows its attitude.

Why do drone propellers spin in different directions?

Opposite spin cancels the twisting force so the drone does not rotate uncontrollably, and lets it turn on command.

Who repairs drone parts in India?

NVX repairs motors, ESCs, gimbals, sensors and flight controllers at its New Delhi workshop.
